I have just done my first week of training with Imperial College on their Digital Transformation - Five Game-Changing Technologies for Business course.
The first week was all about the Cloud and Mobile. We learnt all about 5G, what it is and what it is going to mean for business. It completely changed my understanding of the technology, and opened my eyes to what is coming in the next few years.
Did you know...
- 5G has the potential to be 10 times faster than 4G as standard, anything up to 100 - 400 Mbit/s
- Latency (delay) will reduce from 60ms to 8-12ms - resulting in near-instant data transmission
- 5G is being thought of as a new commonly available infrastructure, like electricity, rather than just an improvement in existing mobile technology
- Future iterations of 5G will deliver URLLC (Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications), with uptime of 99.999% and latency of 1ms
So what does this mean for business?
The combination of speed, capacity, latency and reliability will mean that things like autonomous vehicles and remote medical procedures become much more feasible. Many of the applications of 5G have not yet been invented, but it is being compared to the invention of electricity as a game-changing technology, so I think we are in for some exciting developments in the next few years.
And for events? It could completely change the virtual event experience, opening up the possibility of much larger global audiences being fully engaged in your event even if they can't be there. After all, many of the technical issues with current virtual event solutions are grounded in speed and/or capacity of data transfer (although of course there are many other reasons why face-to-face is better!)
I'll share more nuggets of information as I go through the course :-)
